The Capitalization of Compute

Meanwhile, Google is navigating a complex relationship with its own infrastructure. While its TPUs provide a sustainable cost advantage for frontier labs, the company is facing criticism over the quality of its AI-integrated search. Reports of AI summaries inventing facts—such as incorrect sunset times—highlight a broader concern regarding the collapse of digital spaces and the risk of "digital erasure" as AI intermediaries sit between users and original sources.

The Open Weights Frontier

Meta has signaled a return to the open weights arena with the release of Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion parameter model optimized for agentic task completion and multi-step reasoning. This move coincides with a broader debate over AI distillation—the process of using powerful closed models to improve smaller open ones.
